Often civic input is "best" tolerated by the business association/Development Corporation.
Residents seek to Influence/guide responsible development (one that reflects sustainable commerce, reflects community interest, and reinforces a healthy Main Street retail that is representational of "complete" communities)
The community supports development that enhances and encourages a healthy mix of retail, business, services and amenities and housing for an intergenerational community. I.e., affordable housing marketed to mid career and retirees; hotel; bakery, supermarket, bookstore-CVD, electronics and stationary store, daycare, office space and design centers, etc…

Friends of the Manayunk Canal (FMC):
Friends of the Manayunk Canal , a local not-for-profit watershed organization, annually holds numerous events that seek to enhance the community in proactive ways, including Dog Days of September (an educational event promoting responsible pet ownership), Historic and Environmental tours (professionally guided walks along the Towpath), Philadelphia Cares Day Clean Up (a local opportunity to pitch in to clean up Philadelphia) and Trunks for the ‘Yunk Tree Planting Party (a day of helping out with Towpath restoration work followed by hanging out at the Manayunk Brewery).
Civic groups, like FMC, are also powerful tools for change and often give the community a collective voice during times of dissent. Friends of the Manayunk Canal has a long history of organizing and advocating for the responsible development of Venice Island, a sensitive island in the floodway of the Schuylkill River located between Manayunk Canal and the Schuylkill River.
National Complete Streets Coalition:
The streets of our cities and towns are an important part of the livability of our communities. They ought to be for everyone, whether young or old, motorist or bicyclist, walker or wheelchair user, bus rider or shopkeeper. But too many of our streets are designed only for speeding cars, or worse, creeping traffic jams. Now, in communities across the country, a movement is growing to complete the streets. States, cities and towns are asking their planners and engineers to build road networks that are safer, more livable, and welcoming to everyone.

Designing and Building Healthy Places:
Healthy places are those designed and built to improve the quality of life for all people who live, work, worship, learn, and play within their borders -- where every person is free to make choices amid a variety of healthy, available, accessible, and affordable options.
